WASHINGTON— Representative Scott Franklin (R–FL) issued a statement in opposition to the House passage of gun-control legislation H.R. 8, the Universal Background Checks Act, and H.R. 1446, the Enhanced Background Checks Act:
“As a gun owner and defender of the Constitution, I strongly believe in Americans’ right to own firearms. While the intent of H.R. 8 may sound good, it is criminals who will benefit from restrictions placed on law-abiding gun owners. In a perfect world, abusive partners would not harm loved ones. Yet under this bill, someone who lends a friend a gun for self-protection would be breaking the law,” Rep. Franklin stated. “The Enhanced Background Checks bill, H.R. 1446, is another dangerous effort that would delay law-abiding citizens’ right to purchase a firearm,” Franklin continued. “Under a Republican majority, Congress acted to harden schools, strengthen the National Instant Background Check System, and improve mental health resources to prevent gun violence. Neither of these bills would have prevented the mass shooting tragedies our nation has faced. They are simply an attempt to restrict the rights of law-abiding gun owners.”
