WASHINGTON—Representative Scott Franklin, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement after voting yes on H.R. 7691, the Additional Ukraine Supplemental Appropriation Act:
“As a retired Naval aviator who deployed in several global conflicts and now a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I know supporting Ukraine is critical for U.S. national security. Russia poses a very credible threat to the American people, second only to China. Ukraine’s remarkable resistance to the invasion is diminishing Russia’s military capability and depleting its resources. These efforts can potentially hinder Moscow’s ability to threaten U.S. interests for years or even decades to come. It is in America’s interest to support Ukraine in this fight today so that our sons and daughters do not have to spill blood in the future.
“For the first time in decades, our European allies are galvanized against the looming threat Russia poses. Americans have seen the consequences of what happens when we ignore threats abroad. We cannot repeat the mistakes of the past.
“While I understand the concerns surrounding this bill’s price tag, especially during a time of economic crisis, we must consider the long term benefits this funding will provide. It not only helps Ukraine in their fight to defend their sovereignty, but also provides critical resources to replenish our military stockpiles here at home. Supporting Ukraine is also encouraging our European allies to sever energy ties with Russia and purchase American energy, which would yield benefits to the American economy for decades to come.”
